The Zoo

Josh always asks us what animals we want to be. Today, on the way home from church, Josh rode with me and was asking me what animal I was, what was daddy etc. I decided we needed to make it a learning moment and have everybody be an animal that their name/title started with. SO, here is what we decided, and some snippets from the conversation.

Josh: Jaguar
Sam: Snake
Mommy: Monkey or Rachel: Rhinocerous
Daddy: Doggie or Kevin: Kangaroo
Zeke: Zebra (But, if we call him Ezekiel he has to be an Elephant).
When we decided elephant, Josh of course asked: "But what will Grandma be??"
Grandma: Giraffe
Grandpa Stewart AND Grandpa John: Gorillas
Nicholas: Newt chasing a bug! (from his song)
Ashley: ALLIGATOR!
Sarah: Seal
Brian: Beautiful Butterfly (that was all Josh's idea!)
Tim: TIGER!
Nana: NIGHTINGALE (Also from a musical toy we have)
Old Grandpa: Ostrich

Then as we were pulling into the garage Josh says: "Mommy, we really have a good zoo!!"

Staycation 2009

This Spring Break mom and the boys stayed home. We played games, built towers, and on sunny days went outside for walks or running. The boys tried new foods and also cried about having to eat supper. We spent lots of time with Grandpa John and we even spent a day with our friends Brendan and Sydney. Best of all...was when daddy came home!

Sin and Annual Easter debate

Conversation this morning:

Josh: NOOOO!!! I don't want to go potty!
Rachel: Joshua, it is naughty to say no to mommy. you have to go in time out.
Sam (VERY serious): Being naughty is sin.
Rachel: Yes it is.
Sam: But mommy, Sin happens. Sin happens.

My Annual Easter Debate
Last night I shared Cadberry eggs (my favorite) with Sam and Josh and it got me thinking easter.... I am sure most of you have heard this or experience this same easter debate. Some background info: neither Kevin nor I were raised to celebrate Easter with bunnies etc. Easter is the most important Christian holiday, and yet we really don't do anything. I mean, we have the occasional family dinner- but that is all. It often just feels like a sunday dinner. So, what do we do with our kids? Every year this is how the debate in my head goes (condensed version, you get the point):

Reasons for easter party:
1. Fun- scavenger egg hunt! SO FUN! I (and my kids) love games!
2. finding big and small things to put in an easter basket- I would LOVE to do that!
3. Chocolate. Need I say more?

Reasons not to have a big bash:

1. What do bunnies and eggs have to do with Easter? It takes away the real meaning and I don't know how to explain the easter bunny to my kids. they are already confused about that santa character that some of their friends talk about!
2. My kids really don't need more STUFF. As fun as it is to get them things (yes I love buying things for my kids) they don't need it! And, I don't need them to be greedy. Christmas is hard enough dealing with the battle between giving and getting.
3. The kids (And ME!) definitely do not need more candy.

Any advice or suggestions? Play a game of hide the crosses or empty graves? Any chocolate crosses out there? Or can I just say that chocolate eggs are really chocolate rocks- you know, the moved the stone and saw the grave was empty!

Missing daddy

I made shapes with the number of days until Kevin is home so the kids can count them down.

5 more days!

Zeke! Are you saying 5 more days too??? No...just reaching for the camera.

A silly face for daddy!

Zeke Plays Hockey

Zeke played hockey in the living room today! I walked in and he was hitting the ball and crawling or walking to it, then hitting it again.

But sometimes tables got in the way.

Uh oh, where did it go?!?!

Sam's First Soccer Practice

Our blog needs an update. I wish I took a picture this morning of the boys waving goodbye to daddy, but I didn't. They are going to miss him! Maybe I will take pictures of them crying for him later this week...

Thursday was gorgeous weather, and perfect for Sam's first soccer practice. His team has 7 people, ages 4 and 5. First they ran a lap around the field. Sam and Jaden stayed right behind the coach.

Next they practiced kicking/passing to each other.

This picture is funny because Sam really did spend almost the entire practice with his hands in his pocket. I don't know if it was a "This is so easy" stance, or "I am not supposed to use my hand in soccer" idea...

They also did some dribbling. They need a little work at this...

Meanwhile, I had forgotten to take toys for Josh and Zeke. Of course, Josh was more than happy to play in the dirt.

This is Zeke saying, MMMMMMM, to the cinnamon bread from Great Harvest.
